Sarah Moquin Blog #2: Foam Rollars and The Stick: Miracle Workers

Last Sunday I ran the Hyannis half marathon for the second time. I love this race because it is a flat course and who doesn’t enjoy a beach view while they run? It was a great sunny day, perfect for a winter run.  The weather was comforting, because I had been out of town visiting friends the days leading up to the race and I was a little nervous about how it would go.  I have been struggling with plantar fasciitis and some IT band issues this year and am not logging quite as many miles as I would like to as a result.  The race started well for me, but before long I felt the telltale stab in my heel, and tightening in my hip and I was stopping to stretch ever few miles for the duration of the race.

Luckily I am far from the first runner  to experience these issues and can benefit from the collective wisdom.  I actually don’t know any runners who have not come across some sort of overuse injury so I find that there is no shortage of tips and tricks.  Two things that I have found to be invaluable are my foam roller and The Stick, or as I like to call them, the miracle workers.

Top: Foam Roller, Bottom: The Stick

I always knew that stretching was crucial to running, but I never realized what was out there to help me.  I first fell in love with the foam roller last year during marathon training. After hearing a teammate on the Run for Research Team proclaim “I want to marry my foam roller”, I had to check it out.  Rolling my legs over a foam cylinder was strange at first, but once I started to feel the benefits I was hooked.  Every knot in my legs that I couldn’t ever seem to stretch enough was no match for the mighty foam roller.

This year, my trusty foam friend has had to move over in favor of my new obsession, The Stick.  There is no muscle too sore, no knot too tight for the stick.  You may have seen these at race expos, the gym, or hanging on the wall at Bayside Runner and wondered what in the world it was.  Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s an absolute miracle. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is that unlike the foam roller it does not involve getting on the floor, which after 13 (or more!) miles is not always an easy feat.  I would be nowhere without these two items.  Some days when the fundraising and the running seems like too much, a moment of Zen with one of these gets me right back on track.

Happy Running!

Sarah Moquin Blog #1

Bayside Runner is proud to support South Shore native Sarah Moquin for her second Boston Marathon run in support of the American Liver Foundation.  Sarah will be sharing her thoughts on the training for the next few weeks for the 2012 Boston Marathon.  She will be talking about the products she uses, the runs she completes or just practical training advice.  Please follow Sarah’s blogs and donate to her cause by clicking  here.  Below is Sarah’s introduction and first blog.

_________________________________________________________

Hi There! I’m Sarah Moquin, and I’m currently training for my second Boston Marathon with the American Liver Foundation’s Run for Research team. I first learned about the team as a college senior who thought that any marathon that didn’t involve the MTV show ‘The Real World’ was just insane. Even more insane was the friend I watched trudge up heartbreak hill that year. What was she thinking? Five years later I was surprised to find myself among those insane people, and absolutely thrilled about it.

Growing up, running the Boston Marathon was always one of those crazy, unattainable dreams, right up there with “live on the moon” or “meet the New Kids on the Block”. Playing sports during my years at Silver Lake High School, running for the sake of running was almost always a punishment. It wasn’t until after I finished college and found myself on a very limited budget without the cash for a gym membership that I decided to give it a try. Before I knew it, it became part of my routine, and then an all out addiction.

Countless 5Ks, a few 10Ks, and two half marathons later, my mind started to wander back to the marathon. I decided that maybe it wasn’t such a crazy dream after all; maybe I could really do it. It was around this time that I started to see Liver Disease popping up all over my life. Friends, Family, co-workers… no one was safe. With over 100 different types of Liver Disease out there, it seemed to be lurking around every corner. I thought back to that April day, watching my friend in her bright orange Run for Research singlet, and I thought “why not me?” I knew that this was a cause I needed to get involved with, so why not run? The next thing I knew my application to the team had been submitted, and I was wondering just how much trouble I had gotten myself into.

Now in my second year, I can honestly say that joining this team was the best decision I have ever made. It has given me an opportunity to combine my dedication to raising money for the American Liver Foundation and my love of running. More importantly, it has allowed me to share everything I’ve learned from both. Particularly when it comes to running, I’ve learned a lot of lessons the hard way, like what kind of pants to avoid when race day comes and it’s a torrential downpour, or why voluntarily eating a jelly like substance called “gu” is actually a good idea sometimes!

Winter Warrior March

Winter Warrior March

In January, we saw who was tough enough to run/walk everyday.  In February, we are checking our winter running skills with a night run, trail run and long run.

In March, we have two great challenges.  First, all we ask of you is to give us 3 miles a day for a week.  Here’s the twist, the 3 miles a day must be spread over 13 runs/walks in our:

BAYSIDE RUNNER WINTER WARRIOR 13 RUN CHALLENGE
Sponsored by Vibram Five Fingers and Injinji socks.

You will have 6 days where your runs are split between a run that is at least 1 mile and another that is at least 2 miles.  Runs must be separated by at least 6 hours. You get one “rest day” where all you have to do is run 3 miles in one shot.  You can choose your rest day.  The week the contest is running is Monday, March 19 through Sunday, March 25 so that your last run could be part of the BAYSIDE RUNNER WINTER WARRIOR 2 HOUR CHALLENGE (MORE ON THAT BELOW!!!)

This challenge is sponsored by Vibram Five Fingers.  Anyone who completes the challenge will get:
1. Gift bag with goodies from Vibram, Injinji and more!
2. $10 off your next running shoes at Bayside Runner
3. $20 off your next pair of Vibram Five Fingers
4. Be entered in a raffle for a pair of Vibram Five Fingers
5. The respect and admiration of your peers

This contest is FREE. To sign-up, please email raceseries@baysiderunner.com by Wednesday, March 14.
1. Name
2. T-shirt size
3. Sock size (or shoe size if you don’t know your sock size)
You must email your daily results by NOON on the following day.  For example, your runs on March 20 are due by NOON on March 21.

BAYSIDE RUNNER WINTER WARRIOR 2 HOUR CHALLENGE

This event is open to all and no prior participation in Winter Warrior events is required!

The second challenge is to test your endurance.  We have mapped out a two mile loop around Charge Pond in Myles Standish State Park.  The challenge is to see how many loops you can run in two hours.  Bayside Runner will provide the countdown clock, the starting gun and water/aid stations.  YOU have to BRING IT for 2 hours.  You can walk, jog, run or sprint this challenge.  Challenge is on March 25 at 9 am.

All participants will receive a sweet Winter Warrior mesh running hat.  In addition, there will be prizes based on how many loops you can run/walk.  Registration is $20.  Register on Active.com:

Bayside Runner Return Policy

30 Day Running/Walking Shoe Return Policy

Thank you for coming to Bayside Runner to be fitted for your shoes!  Although you have been expertly fitted for your new shoes, we understand that there are times when new shoes just don’t work out.  Our return policy is intended to give you a risk-free chance to try the shoes to make sure they are the correct shoes for your feet.

If your shoes aren’t working for you, you may return them for an exchange or full refund within 30 days of purchase.  This policy does not cover Vibram Five Fingers or sandals from any brand. See below for more information on Vibram Five Fingers. Returns must include an original receipt, plus all tags and packaging. Any footwear that was special ordered includes a $30 non-refundable fee.

A couple of notes on what new shoes do and don’t do:

  • Running shoes can help alleviate some of the causes of injuries, but are not an overnight cure.  Not every injury is necessarily caused or eased by shoes.
  • It takes 2 FULL WEEKS to break in a quality pair of running shoes.  They will feel different at times than they did in the store.  Give them time to break in before judging whether they will work long-term.
  • If during the fitting process, you and your fitter agreed upon a shoe size that’s different from what you are normally accustomed to, remember that it can take up to a month to adjust to the new size.

Vibram Five Fingers Return Policy

We are excited that you are interested in trying Vibram Five Fingers and exploring minimalism in your running shoes!  When used properly, minimalism can have many benefits.

Due to business constraints, we have a different return policy for Vibram Five Fingers than we do for the other shoes we carry.  Five Fingers shoes must be returned within 30 days,  in “like new” selling condition, with the original box and tags.  They cannot display any evidence of having been worn outside or be dirty, scuffed, or the like.

If they are not in “like new” condition, we can only accept returns for manufacturer’s defects such as torn stitching, damaged straps, irregularities in the sole or insole, or color bleeding issues. We accept returns for manufacturer’s defects up to 90 days from the date of purchase.

Returns must include an original receipt, plus all tags and packaging.
